Deadliest Catch
I am totally caught up in the show Deadliest Catch! I am so addicted to it.
The documentary style, Discovery Channel show, about crab boat fishermen lures me in episode after episode. I’m uncertain why, I like documentaries, but I don’t like crab!
The name Deadliest Catch comes from the fact commercial fishing is statistically the most dangerous job. Especially so on crab boats because of the severe conditions they endure.
They fish in the Bering Sea, and a home base for them is Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
It is narrated by Mike Rowe, from “Dirty Jobs” and has been around for three seasons, after starting out as a single episode special named “Deadliest Job”.
For some reason, I find the one hour show totally intriguing. I’m literally captivated by these “he men” fishermen doing their thing.
The Northwestern has been involved since the beginning, being featured in Deadliest Job. They have an excellent safety record, and it is my favourite boat.
I’m a little embarrassed I have a favourite, Lol, But I love the boys on the Northwestern!
I find myself crushing on Captain Sig, lol, he's the prom king of the group. I get all excited when the show returns to a Northwestern segment!
I also enjoy the Cornelia Marie’s crew, the show follows several boats, including the Time Bandit and Maverick.
The show films the fishermen at work, throwing the pots (that’s what they call the crab catchers!) and retrieving them after they “soak”. The amazing footage includes accidents, and injuries caused by the brutal Bering Sea weather. The crews sometimes have to work in the ditch (meaning the waves are coming from the side) and they also contend with snow, wind, rogue waves and ice build up on deck.
Captains juggle moody seasoned deckhands and naïve “greenhorns” (the new guy), deal with waves, weather, and mechanical problems, all the while trying to fill the boat with their quota of crab. But they still find time for some practical jokes.
I know that the idea is a lot more romantic in my mind then the actual, lol. Because really, I’m betting a group of tired, stinky crab boat fisherman, sleeping sitting up, in their boots, on a cold, wet boat can’t be all that hot.
Look at the size of that crab!
Although they do make good cash for a job well done.
I can’t stop watching, it reels me in and I love every minute of it.
Anyone else watch this show and love it? Or am I in some strange crab fishermen hypnotic state?

Post a CommentHave you played the game on Discovery.com? I can't figure it out, but it looks fun!!
Are you too Sashak?! Cool! OMG, I just love it! And I think the guys are getting hotter!
I'll get to set my own pots I think! lol
I haven't played the game, I just discovered it while I was searching pics for this.
I'll have to spend some time figuring it out.
I like Mike too, I watch Dirty Jobs all the time. I think the funniest one was at the monkey reserve and they were all getting attacked.
AHAHA!! Dirty Jobs is one the best shows EVA! The
reserve lady was a hilarious
bitch! Did you see the one with the farm that made goat milk soap? I love that one!!
OH!! He filmed a few shows here in Charleston!! The shrimp boat one & the crabbing one!
for Mike Rowe!!
I watch it too. Sig isn't my favorite. He seems like he just wants to be on TV. But I love the father & son on the Cornelia Marie and the husband & wife on the Farwest Leader.
Yeah! The father & sons are awesome!! Sig cracks me & does does the (Danish? Finnish? Dutch?) wife on the Farwest Leader. I love how she wins all the bets!
My husband and I watch this a lot!!! I am totally in love with documentaries and yeah, crab makes me wanna hurl too but it's interesting to watch....remember that one episode where they were opposite another boat and the guy fell in the freezing water and they saved him!!!!! That was hardcore!
Oh man, I forgot to mention Farwest Leader. No offence to them.
Yeah, Ragnhild, Greg's wife, lol, she's from Norway, she the cook. I was surprised, I thought some fishermen think women are bad luck. And she does win all the bets, and they got the most crab that one time where she said to put them!
Jamers, that guy going overboard was so scary! Omg, I don't think we realise how freaking lucky he was. Thank goodness for the Time Bandit.
I don't think you get back in very often if you go over. And then he was still in danger because he was so cold.
Thats cool about Mike Rowe coming near you Sashak.
at the
reserve bitch!
I've watched a few episodes with the hubs who is totally hooked. There's something about rugged fisherman that is hot! Oh and I only watch Dirty Jobs for Mike Rowe.
ooh yeah! I
over rugged guys!! I hope there is a new season soon!
I though knew how dangereous that kind of work is, but I really was shocked to see it on TV. Those guys really do risk their lives everytime they go out. The wife/ momma of the guys on the Cornelia Marie must hold her breath until they come home
OH! And there was a recent eppy of Dirty Jobs where Mike wore a Dutch Harbor t-shirt! Mick & I were all excited. But thats cause we are a
& a
Really?! I'll have to watch for that. I'm surprised I missed Mike in that shirt!
You know what I was thinking a couple weeks back, that the camera men also risk alot, unless they mount some on deck or whatever. I know they wear mics, so there's no boom mic guy trying to flop around the deck! lol
When I was looking stuff up, I noticed alot of them are married. And on the Northwestern, its three brothers eh?
Oh God, I am too into this show!
I was going on about it yesterday and even my son
was like Okay, okay...lol
Wasn't there a season where one of the boats with a camera crew went down? I think two camera guys died a couple years ago.
Sticky, a boat did go down, I think they found one survivor. I recall them being trained by the coast guard and putting on the life suits and being timed and stuff in that episode.
I don't know if camera men drowned, that would be awful!
They must get some wicked danger pay for that job.
OMG. I
this show! Has anyone seen the "behind" the scene's special about the camera men?
They've got it just as hard... one guy slipped on the ice and fell down the man hole... he broke 3 ribs!
Oh, and if you like Deadliest Catch, try "Iceroad Truckers". It's the same deal, but these guys have to drive 20-ton trucks over an ice lake during the coldest season and hope the lake doesn't crack. It's insane!
I've never watched the show but I met a guy who was involved in that business and it was truly dangerous and demanding. The show doesn't exaggerate at all.
I also read an article in tv guide explaining how hard were the conditions for all the crewmen (cameras, sound) and how they'd pick only the guys that had some background in adventure sports or previous experience. Mostly of their crew has stayed the same too.

Yeah, Jinx. I remember when the boat went down. They found one survivor & two empty life suits
It may have been that eppy, but there was one where Sig & the Cap't of the Cornelia Marie (WHY can't I remember his name?) were crying in the wheelhouse. It was so sad
Wikipedia has a table of what boats are shown in each season, and a table of what boats went down or lost someone. No camera guys, I must be imagining things.
Wow, I never saw that list Sticky, thanks.
They were all even so emotional when that guy fell in and was rescued.
I think the one sashak remembers is the same one I remember and its the Ocean Challanger.
I didn't realise there had been so many deaths. I remember them crying. It's Phil on the Cornelia Marie!
Its quite the ride they take when they go out, partly why they are paid well.
Now I feel like going to Red Lobster...

I think deadliest catch is awesome!
I like Sig and think he is the best capitan. As for
Ragnhild, she is really wierd. No offense but who would want to have the name Ragnhild? I like Edgar and agree that the Northwestern is the best boat! Yeah it is really sad when a person dies
at sea, I can't belive that Phil cryed! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
